Many South African businesses have joined the retailing frenzy made popular in the USA that is called Black Friday, offering big savings ONLINE.

Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving in the United States, and it falls on the 25th of November 2016 this year.

History:

Contrary to popular belief Black Friday did not originate in the slave trade where slaves were sold off at discounted rates after thanksgiving in the USA, to assist farmers to get the crops harvested before the winter season. The earliest known use of the word “Black Friday” in a retail context was in 1961.

Workers would call in “sick” a day after Thanksgiving in order to have four consecutive days off – in effect creating an unknown side effect – major traffic jams and a SHOPPING SPREE! Since its early days, Black Friday has created a “run on the malls” since shoppers start at 12:00 AM in the morning to be first in line to buy the best bargains.

Black Friday has since grown globally into a shopping spree leading to chaos in stores across the world as some shoppers even camp outside retail shops to get to the best deals first.

Craziest Story: Sometimes the brick and mortar shopping frenzy gets so hectic in the USA that people do strange things. A woman in Philadelphia reportedly attacked a rival shopper with a stun gun during a fight for items on sale during Black Friday period. The fight, involving three females, grew more vicious until one of them put an end to it with a stun gun! So ladies beware!
